John and Cynthia Adkins/Texas Exes Houston Chapter Forty Acres Scholarship

The Texas Exes Houston Chapter is a local chapter of the Texas Exes, the alumni association of The University of Texas at Austin. The purpose of the chapter is to connect local Texas Exes to each other and to the past, present, and future of The University of Texas at Austin. The chapter has a variety of committees and activities designed to fulfill the purpose and vision of the Texas Exes in Houston and its surrounding cities. The Houston Chapter is a 501©(3) non-profit organization, which raises money to provide Houston-area high school students scholarships to attend the University.

In 2008, the Texas Exes Houston Chapter initiated fundraising to endow a Forty Acres Scholarship to honor Life Members Cynthia and John Adkins for their extraordinary service to The University of Texas at Austin, the Texas Exes, and the Houston Texas Exes.

John, BA ’74, JD ’77, is a real estate/banking/corporate lawyer with Blank Rome LLP in Houston. He is a long-time volunteer for the Texas Exes and served as president of the organization in 2005. He received the UT Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award in 1985.

Cynthia, BS ’74, presently serves as Executive Director for The Institute of Rehabilitation and Research Foundation (TIRR). Prior to her tenure with TIRR, she was a consultant with Sterling Associates. She has served as the President of the Houston Junior League and has served on the Episcopal High School Board and Kinkaid School Board. Mrs. Adkins was President of River Oaks Country Club, has chaired the Theta Charity Antiques Show, and has served on numerous boards including the Whitney Bank, Bayou Bend and the Development Board for The University of Texas and Episcopal Health Charities.
