Ruben R. and Dardanella G. Cardenas/Jamail & Long Challenge Grant Scholarship

Ruben R. Cardenas and Dardanella G. Cardenas established this scholarship to benefit Mexican-American law students at The University of Texas School of Law. Mr. Cardenas graduated from UT’s School of Law in 1958. He is a Partner with Cardenas, Whitis & Stephen, L.L.P. in McAllen and an emeritus member of the Board of Directors of Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc., Frost National Bank and a retired member of the Board of Directors of SBC Communications. Mr. Cardenas is a recipient of Distinguished Alumnus Awards from both UT Austin and St. Edward’s University. Mr. and Mrs. Cardenas received the Easter Seals of Hidalgo County Humanitarian Award in 1994. Both are strong supporters of higher education.

Matching funds for this scholarship are provided by Joe and Teresa Lozano Long of Austin and Joe and Lee Jamail of Houston who contributed $1,000,000 each in matching funds to encourage the creation of scholarships to promote diversity at The University of Texas at Austin.
